Memento mori

Before it is twilight , we said of a body,
Let us get down to this dust business .

It was memento mori ,the dusty word
We learnt in someone’s effort to learn

How to be dust ,in a church monument
Bowing respect before its marble dust ,

How to stay fit in skyless entombment,
Be held up for dust to dust comparison.

A dusty daughter is on way to the dust.
We will wait for her to reach this heap.

Meantime , may the cows return home
And the basil leaves turn dust in mouth.

(Reference is to George Herbert’s poem Church monuments )
