How long has any thing lasted
From beginning, says the king
Gilgamesh of all time maggots.
How long has he stared at sun,
As silver fish lived off his epic.

Intervals have to be closed off
And cannot be left open-ended.
All these superstore fragrances
Would last a second on palms
Like Gilgamesh’s immortality.
A palm cannot stay upended.

How long has the poem stared
At blank page, filling our suns.
How long has everybody’s sun
Risen from a sleeping blanket
Lasted after birds went home.
How long has an interval lasted
From the beginning of alltime.
